Customs officials at a German airport have made a spine tingling find in a cookie container. In July 2025, officials at the Cologne-Bonn Airport reported opening up a suspicious package which contained about 1,500 tarantulas.
The shipment, which originated in Vietnam, was disguised as cookies, but agents knew something was up when they didn’t smell freshly baked goodies in the tin. Upon further investigation, they discovered the hairy spiders wrapped in small plastic tubes. Unfortunately, most didn’t survive the trip.
A criminal investigation was launched in hopes of determining who these spiders were going to be delivered to. The surviving tarantulas were placed into professional care.
